Michitaka Nakatomi

Consulting Fellow, RIETI; Special Advisor to JETRO

Michitaka Nakatomi is a Consulting Fellow at the Research Institute of Economy, Trade and Industry (RIETI) and a Special Adviser to the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO). He was a Principal Trade Negotiator of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and a Senior Fellow at RIETI in 2011-2012. His former posts include the President of JETRO in 2008-2011; Director-General for international trade policy at METI in 2006-2008; Deputy Director-General at the Economic Affairs Bureau of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) in 2004-2006; Counselor, Japanese mission to Geneva in 1992-1995; and First Secretary at the Embassy of Japan in the United States in 1985-1988.

He joined the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI), the predecessor of METI, in 1977 after graduating from the University of Tokyo and has worked on many trade issues at multilateral, bilateral, plurilateral, and regional levels. As a representative of Japan, he engaged in the negotiation of the Information Technology Agreement in 1995-1997, five FTAs with Mexico, the Philippines, Brunei, Indonesia, and Switzerland in 2002-2008, and the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) in 2005-2008.
