Ulrike Malmendier

Edward J. and Mollie Arnold Professor of Finance, Haas School of Business and Professor of Economics, University of California, Berkeley

Ulrike Malmendier is the Edward J. and Mollie Arnold Professor of Finance at the Haas School of Business and also Professor of Economics at the Department of Economics, both at the University of California, Berkeley. She received her PhD in Business Economics from Harvard University in 2002, and her PhD in Law from the University of Bonn in 2000. She previously taught at Stanford’s Graduate School of Business. Her research focuses on behavioural economics and behavioural finance and related topics in corporate finance and applied economics, including mergers and acquisitions, corporate governance, and the effects of financial crises on individual and managerial behaviour.

She has given numerous key note speeches and presentations to practitioners and policymakers, including at the World Economic Forum in Davos (Switzerland). She was a selected speaker at the Review of Economic Studies European Tour 2002, and she received the Prize of the President of the Italian Republic for her book Societas publicanorum. She has also received teaching honors both at Stanford and at Berkeley.

Her research has been published in the top economics and finance journals, including Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics, Review of Financial Studies, American Economic Review, and Quarterly Journal of Economics. She currently serves as a Co-editor for the Journal of Economic Perspectives. She also is a Research Associate at NBER (Corporate Finance and Labor Economics), a Faculty Research Fellow at IZA, a CESifo Affiliate, and a CEPR Research Affiliate. She has been a Visiting Scholar at the Max Planck Institute in Bonn, Visiting Fellow at Princeton University, and Visiting Professor at the University of Chicago, the California Institute of Technology, and the University of Zürich.
