Antonio de Lecea

Principal Advisor, European Commission

Antonio de Lecea is Principal Advisor in the European Commission, where he has served in various management, diplomatic and advisory positions since 1986. He has been 2016-2017 EU Senior Fellow at the National University of Singapore Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy conducting research and lecturing on Europe, globalisation, and global economic governance. Between 2009 and 2015 he served as Economic and Finance Minister at the EU Delegation (Embassy) to the USA in Washington. In that capacity he was guest lecturer on the global financial and sovereign debt crises, as well as on financial regulation and transatlantic convergence, at leading US universities and professional fora. Prior to that, he served as the European Commission G8-G20 Finance Subsherpa and Director for International Economic Affairs, in charge of EU coordination at the peak of the global financial crisis. From 1999 to 2004 he served as Economic Advisor to the European Commission President. Previously, he held several management positions in the EU Revenue and Budget Management Departments.

A. de Lecea earned his Ph.D. in quantitative economics from Louvain Catholic University and a degree in economics from Barcelona Autonomous University. He is an Associate Professor in the Basque Country University, currently on leave. He has published on globalization, Europe's growth, financial regulatory convergence, and economic diplomacy, fiscal and financial integration.
