George Kopits

Senior Scholar, Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars

George Kopits is a Senior Scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and a member of the Portuguese Public Finance Council. In 2012 he chaired the OECD Reference Group on Independent Fiscal Institutions and participated in Peru's Commission on the Macro-Fiscal Framework. In 2009-11 he served as the first Chair of the Fiscal Council in Hungary – elected unanimously by Parliament – and in 2004-09 he was a member of the Monetary Council, National Bank of Hungary.

Previous positions include Assistant Director at the International Monetary Fund and Financial Economist at the US Treasury Department. He has given technical advice to numerous governments in Europe, Latin America, and Asia, and has held visiting academic appointments at Bocconi, Budapest, Cape Town, Johns Hopkins, Siena, and Vienna universities. Currently, he is on the Adjunct Faculty of the Central European University.

Recent publications include Restoring Public Debt Sustainability: the Role of Independent Fiscal Institutions (Oxford University Press, 2013) and Rules-Based Fiscal Policy in Emerging Market Economies: Background, Analysis and Prospects (Palgrave Macmillan, 2004). He holds a Ph.D. from Georgetown University and is a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
