Hongyong Zhang

Dr. Hongyong Zhang is a Fellow and Policy Advisor at the Research Institute of Economy, Trade and Industry (RIETI), Japan. Dr. Zhang is also a Research Fellow at the Center for East Asian Economic Studies of Kyoto University, and the Research Institute for Oriental Cultures of Gakushuin University. He has been a consultant to government organizations including the Asian Development Bank, Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Japan.

His research covers international trade, foreign direct investment, multinational firms, China, and Japan. His recent publications concentrate on the globalization of Chinese and Japanese firms, and the impact of the US-China trade war on Japanese multinational corporations. Dr. Zhang’s research has been published in many academic journals including China Economic Review, Journal of Comparative Economics, World Economy, and reported in popular media including Nikkei. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Kyoto University.
