Pablo Ibarraran

Lead social protection economist, IDB

Pablo Ibarrarán is a lead social protection economist at the IDB. He joined the Division in March of 2012, after working for three years in the Office of Strategic Planning and Development Effectiveness, and for four years in the Office of Evaluation and Oversight at the Bank. He has designed and coordinated evaluations on topics relating to social protection, labor markets and health; he has also advised project teams on evaluations of citizen safety and urban development interventions. He also leads teams in the design and implementation of social protection programs, in particular conditional cash transfers, and has an active research agenda on social protection in Latin America. His work has been published journals such as Economic Development and Cultural Change, Latin American Economic Review, IZA Journal of Labor and Development, the Journal of Labor Economics, the Journal of Development Effectiveness and the Journal of International Trade & Economic Development.

A Mexican national, Pablo worked at the Secretaría de Hacienda y Crédito Público in his country after obtaining his degree in Economics from the Centro de Investigación y Docencia Económicas (CIDE) in 1998. In 2004, he earned his doctorate in Economics from the University of California, Berkeley; and since 2009, he has been an associate researcher at the Labor Institute (IZA) in Bonn, Germany.
