Robert Baldwin

Hilldale Professor of Economics, Emeritus, at the University of Wisconsin-Madison

Robert E. Baldwin, who died in 2011, was Hilldale Professor of Economics, Emeritus, at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He published over a hundred theoretical, empirical, and policy-oriented articles in various professional journals and conference volumes in the fields of international trade and economic development and was also the author, co-author or editor of over 20 books.

Baldwin was Chief Economist in the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) in Washington in 1963-64 and has served as a consultant on trade matters in the U.S. Department of Labor, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, the World Bank, and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development He has also been a consultant to various non-governmental organizations such as the Committee for Economic Development, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and the Atlantic Council. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research, a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and is on the Advisory Committee of the Peterson Institute for International Economics. Baldwin served on an international panel of experts to advise the Director-General of the World Trade Organization, Mike Moore from 2001-2003 and in that capacity attended the Ministerial Meeting in Doha launching the current round of trade negotiations.
