Souphala Chomsisengphet

Deputy Director of the Credit Risk Analysis Division within the Economics Department, Office of the Comptroller of the Currency

Souphala Chomsisengphet is the Deputy Director of the Credit Risk Analysis Division within the Economics Department at the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC). Her primary duties to support bank supervision at the OCC involve leading and managing the evaluation of statistical methods used by banks to develop and validate credit risk models for underwriting, risk management, and capital allocation. She also provides quantitative assessment and guidance to support banking policy developments.

In addition, she conducts research in the area of household finance, real estate finance, banking and financial institutions, and applied microeconomics. She has been studying predatory lending in the subprime mortgage market, frictions in mortgage modification, the effectiveness of recent government programs such as HAMP and the CARD Act, information asymmetry in mortgage market and credit card market, and consumer bankruptcy and default behaviors.

Her research is published in the Quarterly Journal of Economics, American Economic Review – Papers and Proceedings, Journal of Financial Economics, Journal of Financial Intermediation, Journal of Urban Economics, Real Estate Economics, Journal of Money, Credit and Banking. Prior to joining the OCC in 2004, Dr. Chomsisengphet was an Economist at the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA). She holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
