Jonathan Jayes is a PhD student in economic history at Lund University in Sweden. His research focuses on technological change and the labor market. He is examining the impact of electrification on the Swedish labor market in the first half of the 20th century, during which the country experienced a rapid rollout of the electrical grid connecting urban areas and the rural countryside. He is interested in using new methods, including machine learning and large language models, to ask new kinds of questions in economic history and to help us better understand the past from a quantitative standpoint.
